My friend Dave uses the term “lazydad” to refer to any activity in which adequate childcare results from minimum effort. For example, setting children loose on their favourite activities while you sip coffee and surf the internet. I can’t set Cole loose per se, but I can still engage in “lazydad” activities to achieve better-than-adequate childcare for almost zero effort. Hint: calling all grandparents!

Parental Leave Days 18 & 19 – LazyDad
Parental Leave days 16 & 17 – There’s no pattern.
As it turns out, there’s no pattern to this little guy. I just can’t figure him out.
Day 16
A fairly uneventful day. In truth, I don’t remember all the details. All it takes is one additional full day (day 17) to erase most of the memories of day 16. But here’s how it pieced together from the best of my memory:

Parental Leave Day 15 – Nothing Exciting!

Parental Leave Day 14 – Compensation for Yesterday
Day 14 went pretty smoothly.
He started off with the same trick as Day 13… act all tired in bed, fooling me into thinking he’d just fall asleep and let me continue my own sleep. Nope. Got up, did some typical morning “get ready” stuff, and quickly realized as we went a bit past his naptime that a fight was forthcoming. So, I “cheated” a bit and went for the car nap. The car nap might be a crutch, but it can’t be good for either party’s mental health to go through a battle just for some sleep.
After the car nap we had some lunch (chicken, pear, “instant cereal in biscuit form”, crackers, water), and I called Grammy up for a visit.

Parental Leave Day 13 – Hell is Overtiredness
Mama Monkey has a parking pass now. So I don’t drive her to work, and Cole doesn’t fall asleep on the way home. Good, right?
Except apparently he doesn’t fall asleep at all.
To make a long story short, fought for sleep for 3 hours. His aunt came over with lunch today (thank God) and got to witness the bleary eyes and the complete unwillingness to sleep.
