The dreaded downgrade to one nap

Posted by Greg May - 23 - 2010 - Sunday ADD COMMENTS

It hasn’t happened yet, but Alex figures it’ll be coming sooner rather than later.

Cole is fighting his afternoon nap. He doesn’t want it, doesn’t think he needs it (and in fairness, for parts of this afternoon, he had energy and wakefulness to spare), and isn’t going to let his parents make him have one.

Well, that last part isn’t entirely true. After one false start and some time spent back on the main floor puttering around, he eventually went down for a nap. And he was SOME GRUMPY when he woke up from it. Which implied to me that he would have been better off staying down, but Alex and I knew without question that a 4:00pm bedtime was NOT going to work. So we just let him slowly un-grumpify over the period of the next 30 mins.

It’s going to be a rough transition, though. After he wakes up in the morning, he’s only good for 1.5 or 2 hours before he’s rubbing his eyes. So when does the 1 nap happen? If he starts to slowly extend that morning gap until lunchtime, then it might happen. But if he doesn’t start ramping it up a bit, we’re goners. He can’t go from a 10:00 wake-up all the way until a 7:00pm bedtime, or even a 6:00pm bedtime. Which means that we’ll have to deal with Scrodgy McGrumblebutt for a significant chunk of his day (worse, the daycare provider and Grammy will), or we’ll have to continue with 2 naps and an increasingly later bedtime. Which is no good either.

Not sure how we’ll approach it yet. Obviously, trying to “force” him to stay awake until a lunchtime nap will help him stretch out that morning gap, but it’s not going to be pretty.

A Few Firsts for Cole

Cole has had a couple of “firsts” lately:

First Steps

This one is tricky. The day we’re considering his day for “first steps” was the 9th of May. But it’s subjective and different parents will classify differently. Here’s how it played out:

Cole is standing there, not holding onto anything, and decides to put one foot in front of the other. He falls. Not daunted, he brushes himself off, and tries a few more times. Step-fall. Step, step-fall. A “step-fall” happens when his weight isn’t really stable on the next foot. So, for me, he wasn’t REALLY taking his first steps, he was putting a foot forward and then falling. But then, about the 5th or 6th time, it was Step. Step. Step-fall. It’s the step in the middle that counted. After taking that first step, he was still balanced, brought his other foot forward and took another step without falling. Then he step-fell.

OK, the connection is only coincidental. But funny!

I was logged into Twitter last night, when a few people (notably, a fellow named Shawn King) started laughing and posting links to Don Cherry’s (always outrageous) suit:

http://shawn-king.posterous.com/wtf-is-don-cherry-wearing

I looked once. I looked twice. Then I replied to the world (don’t bother following those links, they’re redundant copies of the ones already posted above and below):
You’ve seen #DonCherry wearing the suit: http://post.ly/eRa5 . Now own the lunch bag that predates an #nhl legend: http://bit.ly/cKe1pc ;-)

Apparently over a hundred people decided to check it out. As you’ve probably already guessed, Alie coincidentally made a lunch bag with the same print, which is still for sale on the PhineasGrace Etsy store that she and Natalie run:

Too funny!
