The Hallowe’en Report

Buncha photos this time! You lucky people….

Hallowe’en was pretty exciting for the little guy this year. We hadn’t built it up for a super-long time, but he knew it was coming. We coached him in “Trick or Treating”, had been doing some crafts leading up to the day, and of course we had our annual pumpkin carve-off. We tried to get Cole in on the fun with the squishy gooey pumpkin guts, but he wasn’t into it. In the end, we let him paint a small pumpkin his Nana bought for him at the Farmer’s Market. Reading

Two small things, both relating to reading:

1. The monkey is fascinated with letters and numbers lately (though, he doesn’t know the difference quite yet, so he refers to the latter as “letters” also). I don’t mind in the least that about seventeen-thousand times a day he asks, “what do THOSE letters say?” or “what does THIS one say?” Not even being sarcastic; I could answer those questions all day long because I know they signify an interest in written language. And that’s at least a SMALL indicator that he might end up a reader (hopefully among other interests and strengths!).

As much as I go on about how the monkey’s language skills are becoming fairly “advanced”, I am reminded every now and then that he isn’t always perfectly clear. As his parent I get to be around him—learning his habits, being attuned to his mannerisms, and understanding the things that motivate him. It’s easy to take these things for granted, and easy to forget how important they are for communication.

Mainly wanted to post a little “something” to let y’all know that I’m not forgetting about you. I’m just crazy busy!

As usual, I can’t get enough of the little Monkey’s vocabulary growth. Lately he’s really starting to piece together language and come up with his own phrases based on “passing” information. In other words, he’ll say stuff and Alex or I will look at the other and say, “Did YOU teach him that?” “Not me, you?” “Maybe he learned it at daycare!” But sometimes it wasn’t learned at daycare either. It just filtered in through a combination of overhearing conversations, catching something on tv… whatever…! It’s pretty cool when it happens.
