I’m so glad that our little monkey is fostering an enjoyment of singing and dancing. The part that’s funny now (but won’t be funny forever… or will it?) is that he has totally age-INappropriate taste in music.
Current favourites (“These are mine BEST songs!”):
- Superbass – Nicki Minaj
- Starships – Nicki Minaj
- In the Dark – Dev
- I’m Sexy and I Know It – LMFAO
- Glad You Came – The Wanted
- Big In Japan – Martin Solveig with Dragonette (I think this is his favourite best song right now)
Which isn’t to say that he doesn’t like other songs. He likes some of the Laurie Berkner Band stuff (Rocketship Run, for example), and I think right now he likes “I’m Elmo And I Know It” better than the song it parodies.
It’s partly about the dancing, too. “Can we have a dancing in the dark party?” he asks, echoing the lyrics from the Dev song. This just involves turning off the main floor lights, putting YouTube on the TV, and dancing around to his current favourites. Usually he just wants to jump around in a circle, but every now and then we get him to bump hips or wiggle around, and during Starships I can get him to raise his hands to “touch the sky” at the same time as me. During Big in Japan he has done one or two “kickouts” or karate poses because the characters in the video are doing martial arts for much of it.
Future dancer? Hard to say. He just likes the crazy energy expenditure. But we love it when he sings and dances along. Good exercise for us, too.
Here’s that Elmo video. Watch for the part that always makes the monkey ask, “Why does Mr. Noodle pinch his junk?”

I just….I can’t….that’s amazing.
Dancing in the dark parties sound like the BEST THING EVER!
They are “my best” in monkey-speak.
BTW, if you have a sane explanation for why Mr. Noodle appears to be pinching his junk, I’ll share it with the little guy.
Steve and I stared at it once through, then advanced it, watched again, and again, and still have no plausible explanation. What we really want to know is what you’re telling him to explain it!
