Parental Leave Day 14 – Compensation for Yesterday

Day 14 went pretty smoothly.

He started off with the same trick as Day 13… act all tired in bed, fooling me into thinking he’d just fall asleep and let me continue my own sleep. Nope. Got up, did some typical morning “get ready” stuff, and quickly realized as we went a bit past his naptime that a fight was forthcoming. So, I “cheated” a bit and went for the car nap. The car nap might be a crutch, but it can’t be good for either party’s mental health to go through a battle just for some sleep.

After the car nap we had some lunch (chicken, pear, “instant cereal in biscuit form”, crackers, water), and I called Grammy up for a visit.

Parental Leave Day 13 – Hell is Overtiredness

Mama Monkey has a parking pass now. So I don’t drive her to work, and Cole doesn’t fall asleep on the way home. Good, right?

Except apparently he doesn’t fall asleep at all.

To make a long story short, fought for sleep for 3 hours. His aunt came over with lunch today (thank God) and got to witness the bleary eyes and the complete unwillingness to sleep.

Day 11 – June Mommies

I told myself, “Today will be a good day of napping. I will be organized. It will be smooth.”

Trouble is, nobody passed that message along to Cole.

Agenda: almost clear. Meet the “June Mommies” (friends of Mama Monkey who all had children in June) at 1:00, or whenever naps make it convenient. This day should be a piece of pie.

Started off with the usual “nap in the car” thing. Only 45 mins I think. Not a big deal, though. I don’t ‘love’ the car nap, but it’s a nap. I’ll take it where I can get it. He wakes up in a bit of a cranky-pants mood, but not too bad. Let’s keep him busy, which will keep me sane– let’s pack some things up and head over to Nana and Grandpa S’s place. Good idea, but it took a bit more time organizing than I’d like, which meant we reached a point where he wanted some milk. OK, put milk on to get warm, take him for a change of diaper.

But wait… this isn’t working according to plan.

Parental Leave Day 10 – Napping is Easy!

Drove Mama Monkey to work.

Once again, he fell asleep before I even got home.

Napped for about an hour and a half in the car. I slept lightly (but at least I slept) because I was alternating between turning the car on and off (warmth vs. gas wastage).

From 10:45 or so until 12:40 we did various things. I had some food. He had some exersaucer, jolly jumper, and mat time. Plus he drank a LOT of milk, which took up some time. He wasn’t the happiest I’ve ever seen him, but he was OK. We had a few tickles and giggles. Now, he was “due” for a nap at around that time, but since he’s been fighting the 2 hr interval, I decided to get out for a quick little trip, and hopefully he would be tired by the end of it.

12:45 visited my sister at her workplace Read the rest of this entry »

Parental Leave 9 – The Bad, the Good, and the Pee

The Bad

He had another 4-hour crazy period. As I wiped away tears from my eyes and cried to the ceiling “WHYYYY?????” all I could think was that I was being punished for something. But I’m not sure what that something is, which made me cry “WHYYYYYY????” all over again. As I’m, typing this, he’s going through another crazy period next to me on the couch, in Mama’s arms… he thought his bedtime was just another naptime. (But since she’s dealing with it rather than me, I’m managing this time around. ;) )

I gotta figure something out. I did indeed try both of yesterday’s ideas, neither of which was great. The swing helped to the extent that it calmed him down, but Read the rest of this entry »
