Parental Leave Day 10 – Napping is Easy!

Posted by Greg January - 19 - 2010 - Tuesday

Drove Mama Monkey to work.

Once again, he fell asleep before I even got home.

Napped for about an hour and a half in the car. I slept lightly (but at least I slept) because I was alternating between turning the car on and off (warmth vs. gas wastage).

From 10:45 or so until 12:40 we did various things. I had some food. He had some exersaucer, jolly jumper, and mat time. Plus he drank a LOT of milk, which took up some time. He wasn’t the happiest I’ve ever seen him, but he was OK. We had a few tickles and giggles. Now, he was “due” for a nap at around that time, but since he’s been fighting the 2 hr interval, I decided to get out for a quick little trip, and hopefully he would be tired by the end of it.

12:45 visited my sister at her workplace (only a 5 minute drive). Nice visit; I know her colleagues a bit and they were pleased to see Cole. He also had a Poonami full of seeds (lots of whole grain products yesterday!). As I left at around 1:30, seeing his eyes darkening and knowing that he was past due for a nap, I said, “I hope I can get him home before he falls asleep.” I did NOT feel like spending more time in the car. 2 minutes later I called her up from the road, “He’s out.”

“Maybe try taking him in?”

“Yup. If I hold him to my chest he should stay asleep. It’s laying him down that wakes him up. I figure I’ll just grab the La-Z-Boy and see if he stays asleep.”

“Good luck!”

Well, that’s exactly what I did, and it went according to plan. With the exception of a brief interruption in which I was sure he was about to wake up (eyes were open, mouth was looking for milk; I rocked him back to sleep), he was out for just over 3 hours.
Unbelievable.

And that was the end of my “sole parenting” part of the day!

I’m hoping for a repeat of that. The only problem is that if I have to keep him close to my chest, I have to keep myself tired and ready for naps. Otherwise it’ll be a worse 3 hours than being in the car! At least in the car I can read. But today, it was bliss!
