Parental Leave Day 22 – Wastin’ Time

Posted by Greg February - 3 - 2010 - Wednesday

Today I basically passed time between naps. Which, in truth, is how I tend to think of most days. Not that I don’t love hanging out with the little guy and all that, but he’s always so “on on on” (natural for his age) that I look forward to the peace of naps. So, with naps being the “milestones” throughout the day, today was pretty much “wastin’ time”.

Morning was… difficult…

Haven’t had a difficult nap morning in at least a few days, but today he was having none of sleepy time. After doing the bottle, singing, and bouncing thing for 40 minutes (which put him 30 minutes past when he would normally be sleeping), I just lay in bed with him and watched as he rolled and semi-crawled around, playing with his Sleep Sheep™ and the bear Grammy knit for him. Eventually put in some earplugs to help deaden the sound of the Sleep Sheep™ and his occasional outbursts. Just watched. Smiled a bit from time to time (watching is a lot more relaxing than bouncing), rubbed his back at times that I thought he was settling down for sleep, and more or less let him try to “play” it out. Tried feeding him once, but he rejected it.

After 45 minutes of this, he was no closer to sleep, but he had gotten hungry again and was no longer rejecting the bottle. About 5 minutes of bottle and he was ALMOST tired, but then pushed the bottle away and squirmed his face into the crook of my elbow and cried a bit for “mem” (obviously, “Mom” in this case, since he had just pushed the milk away) before falling asleep.

Had a crappy little 40-minute nap, which seems to be the norm for his first nap.

Between lunch, organizing a diaper bag, and giving him some “nakey” time, we were approaching his next naptime before we even got on the road. As I suspected from about ten minutes into the drive, he fell asleep before we reached our destination. Then slept for 2 hours. I’m feeling a bit ripped off in these car naps… on one hand, yay sleep. On the other hand, no sleep for me! And I’m grumpy by 9pm from lack of sleep. I’m the kind of guy that thrives on naps.

Did some shopping… tools and a new knife from Canadian Tire, baskets and egg lifter (actually, for lifting poop) from Dollarama, and some new flash memory from Future Shop. Innes Rd. is really starting to have some handy shopping now. Few cute moments at Canadian Tire:

- They have a change table (which we used) but also a wall-mounted fold-out high-chair thing where dads can place their little ones while they pee. I peed (overshare for the win!), and every time I looked back over my shoulder at him he would crack up. No, he couldn’t see my Johnson, so that’s not the source of his laughter. ;-)
- Grabbed a rubber-handled file, which he proceeded to steal as a chew toy. But when I stole it back and bopped him lightly over the head with it, he got this stoned-out glazed look on his face and a smile. Not sure why, but I then rhythmically tapped (yes, lightly) on his noggin with the packaging, and he started cooing and giggling at it. Funny!
- Perhaps in retaliation, he grabbed it back and proceeded to smack me in the face with it. I didn’t coo or giggle, which may have been his intended result. But I did chuckle a bit.

Funny thing about the trip is, I was looking forward to checking out Lowe’s for the first time. And we never even got there! The 2-hr nap interfered with schedule, so by the time we were done at Future Shop, we were en route for Mom and her Mem.

Tomorrow, swimming! He Looooooves to swim!
