Parental Leave Day 6 – Car Naps

Posted by Greg January - 13 - 2010 - Wednesday

I wasn’t there for this, but legend tells…

Poo escaped the diaper (cloth), smeared up the cover (nylon/poly), got on his clothing, as well as his foot. Poo also got on one of his aunts.

Poo is funny.

But I wasn’t there for it, because I was napping.

Car Naps

Daytime sleep sucked again. We had a quick doctor’s appointment (for his 6-month shots), and when I loaded him up into the car, he fell promptly asleep. I drove to Future Shop to grab a new widescreen LCD monitor, and another 10 minutes later he was awake, for a total of, oh, 30 minutes.

That’s when hell started to break loose.

Yesterday, Steve mentioned to me something that apparently has universal truth: “sleep begets sleep”. Without a good sleep to start the day, it didn’t get any better.

Today was pretty much the first time I had to call Alie to vent. Cole was awake from 10:30 until well past his naptime of 12:30 (1:00 at the latest). From about 12:30 onward he was nuts. Sometimes he would fall asleep for a few seconds, and then wake himself back up, on purpose. He had plenty of milk this time, but it didn’t help. He screamed in the mei tei. He had no patience for tummy time, exersaucer, or jumper. All he needed was sleep, but he was refusing it.

Tried leaving him “alone” (hovering nearby unbeknownst to him) to see if not having me there might get him to throw in the towel. No luck. Almost fell asleep a few times (eyes closed, head down on the bed) and then would bolt awake again. It should be noted that bolting upright is also accompanied by loud, distressed crying and screaming (whether I’m there or not).

Finally it occurred to me that I shouldn’t “fight” against techniques that seem to be working lately. He likes sleeping in the car or in his stroller, and although I wanted to nap with him on the La-Z-Boy or in bed, I just needed him to close his eyes.

30 seconds in the car, despite protests that indicated it might not work, and he was out.

After a quick stop at my workplace (where I was introduced to Gregorio, a styrofoam stand-in wearing my serape, sombrero, and my shoes!), we picked up Alex. She wanted to visit her family, but I desperately needed sleep.

Which worked out perfectly… let her take Cole along for the visit (not that there was a choice; after work hours, he’s given full boobie access) and I promptly went to sleep.

Glorious sleep.

Somewhere in his absence, he pooped all over himself and his aunt. (tee hee)

Tomorrow… I anticipate more driving. I’ll still keep trying for “normal” naps, but until he’s actually ready for a 2-nap schedule, I feel bad witnessing him being so crazy (desperately sleepy!) for pretty much 2 hours straight. And my nerves don’t need the abuse. A soothing drive in the car is fine by me.
