Parental Leave Day 20 – ..And then I walked

Posted by Greg February - 1 - 2010 - Monday ADD COMMENTS

Before getting to today’s adventures, let me start out by mentioning that this weekend Mama Monkey and I went on our first date since the little guy was born. I’ve been wanting to see Avatar, so we started off with the 1:20 show at Silver City’s 3D Imax. It wasn’t high art or anything, but I had a hell of a good time at that movie. One of the most entertaining films I’ve seen in a while. I’ll leave it to the critics to discuss the shortcomings (most of what they say is accurate), but it was still well worth the money. Or in this case, well worth the gift card!

After that we went to our favourite Vietnamese restaurant, New Mee Fung on Booth. Had the usual: rice paper “roll your own” platters. Yum!

Dates aren’t going to be coming fast and furious now, but we’ll get to some more soon enough.

Day 20

I had a late night last night. He had an early morning (4:00am). The family crossed paths as Alex attempted to hand him over to me and I had to beg for bedtime instead. They eventually made it back to bed, but it was not a good start to the day.

Parental Leave Days 18 & 19 – LazyDad

Posted by Greg January - 30 - 2010 - Saturday 2 COMMENTS

My friend Dave uses the term “lazydad” to refer to any activity in which adequate childcare results from minimum effort. For example, setting children loose on their favourite activities while you sip coffee and surf the internet. I can’t set Cole loose per se, but I can still engage in “lazydad” activities to achieve better-than-adequate childcare for almost zero effort. Hint: calling all grandparents!

Parental Leave days 16 & 17 – There’s no pattern.

Posted by Greg January - 28 - 2010 - Thursday ADD COMMENTS

As it turns out, there’s no pattern to this little guy. I just can’t figure him out.

Day 16

A fairly uneventful day. In truth, I don’t remember all the details. All it takes is one additional full day (day 17) to erase most of the memories of day 16. But here’s how it pieced together from the best of my memory:

Morning

I’ll just call it “morning” because I don’t really remember when I got up or what we did with ourselves. I remember looking over at him, half-asleep from my crap sleep schedule, and wishing he’d sleep more instead of clawing at my face with his fingernailed little digits. Not that I really expected anything different, as this was all part of the normal morning routine. But ‘expecting’ and ‘hoping’ are two different things! Read the rest of this entry »

Parental Leave Day 15 – Nothing Exciting!

Posted by Greg January - 25 - 2010 - Monday ADD COMMENTS

I write the title of today’s post with an exclamation mark, because when nothing exciting happens, that means that the day was smooth. OK, it also sometimes means we didn’t do anything interesting, but I’ll take that as a more than worthwhile trade-off.

Parental Leave Day 14 – Compensation for Yesterday

Posted by Greg January - 23 - 2010 - Saturday ADD COMMENTS

Day 14 went pretty smoothly.

He started off with the same trick as Day 13… act all tired in bed, fooling me into thinking he’d just fall asleep and let me continue my own sleep. Nope. Got up, did some typical morning “get ready” stuff, and quickly realized as we went a bit past his naptime that a fight was forthcoming. So, I “cheated” a bit and went for the car nap. The car nap might be a crutch, but it can’t be good for either party’s mental health to go through a battle just for some sleep.

After the car nap we had some lunch (chicken, pear, “instant cereal in biscuit form”, crackers, water), and I called Grammy up for a visit.
